Search Term Trending

Search mega-giant Google has established a Flu tracking site that shows the trends of people across the U.S. performing searches on Flu-related terms.

I look forward to the end of this flu season to determine if the data was an accurate reflection of the virus and its spread.

I begin to ponder, for what else could we use this technology?

Aw shucks, the election already passed. That might have been a good test.

Ebay already tracks significant human events like American Idol or sporting events via their operations center using the website activity. If only they knew enough about their own data to use it for something. Scot Wingo's posting is understandably critical of their pricing structure which doesn't seem to benefit. It would be only an academic step to see if consumer purchasing trends might be predictable.

As the recession continues, it would seem Search Term Trending would be an important technology for retailers as they invest in what consumers are up to.
